Swivel wheel trailer

Discuss with others about towing. What is the best tow vehicle, hitches, brake controllers, etc, keeping in mind that everybody has his/her favorite.

Swivel wheel trailer

Post by campswithcritters »

Well I just had to buy a new toy this trip so got a swivel wheel 5X8 trailer to carry the motorcycle and Sharon's planned 3 wheel bicycle. It is working well so far behind the truck and will hook it to the bird next week for further testing. Charles did you buy one of these? Anybody else own one and how is it working? Problems?

I know someone that has one and they work great, he is very happy with it and carries his pride & joy Harley Davidson.
You will be happy it floats up and down as the camper changes angles.

Won't that restrict the states you can travel in with a second trailer?

No Rob, it is not considered a trailer at all, they consider it a tag axle or extension of the trailer. It does not attach with a ball, it attaches at 2 points so it cannot jack knife. I will just move my license plate from back of trailer to back of it. I went to the manufacturer to pick it up in Katy TX, they claim no one has ever been ticketed with one. Donna, After 20 years of marriage what on earth would give you the idea we even ride off in the same direction? :joke:

Oh, that's right, I forgot: Sharon does NOT like that yellow bike and does NOT want to be seen riding on it, and that probably goes for riding NEXT to it, too, RIGHT???

Planning on it already! Want to get Jack & Boogie tied into the basket to get a pic, she has upgrade ballon white-wall tires and ape hangar bars too. Hope the pics come out good as she just went to bed and does not know I plan to sneak the camera out to a strategic location in the AM! :thumbrt:

That small diameter wheel has got to be doing some serious RPM's at highway speeds. Any trouble with this?

They claim they are trouble-free, but the tire does have a 65 mph limit as with most trailer tires. I have a spare wheel & tire for the just in case. So far I only towed it empty about 40 miles, heading out Wednesday for real testing. Empty was fine and loaded it will have approx 500lbs or half the rated capacity. I loaded it yesterday due to forecast rain next several days, loading was much easier than previous motorcycle rack.

When I checked with the California Highway Patrol Captain in charge of vehicle code enforcement and driver licencing in Sacramento last spring about one of these, I was informed that Yes, they are considered a additional trailer, require a separate vehicle licence, AND the driver is required to possess a Commercial Drivers Licence with appropriate endorsement. Which placed a kabosh on getting a quad for me. It makes no sense to me, but that's how the guys with a badge look at it.

Guess I'll stay out of California then! I do plan to get a Texas Class "A" license this winter anyway. That allows any road legal combination for non-commercial purposes without the additional hassles of holding a CDL.
