Teflon Pin Box Disc

Post by Olbird »

I have never pulled the 5th wheel with the standard hitch before, I always had the Pull-Rite slider hitch for the short wheel base truck.
Now I have the standard hitch that the pin box turns on, does the teflon disc work well with no grease.
Also does the teflon disc scratch the hitch just as if it was riding metal to metal with grease.
I don't like scratching the top of my new hitch so I bought a disc to help reduce friction, hope it works.

My standard hitch is going on eight years old and I have used a teflon donut with it since I got it. The hitch itself shows very little wear and I strongly recommend using it. I do not grease the top of my hitch.

we have had the disk on both our 5ers and have seen zero wear on either the pin box or the hitch, we to use no grease. The service man at the dealer told us to screw it to the hitch because depending on the temp. it falls off when unhooked, I do not agree and just put it on before we hook up, that way both sides can move freely.

Well George you saw mine been using the disk since 1999 works very well it does scuff the hitch head a little but that also could be do to dust and sand that blows on while not towing.

Love those discs! Been using for years with no problems and has not scratched any of my hitches. I use no grease on the disc, but do put a little on the pin itself to avoid wear on it or the hitch jaws. The disc I currently have has about 50K miles on it, my old one just got loose on the pin so it tended to fall off, but it had over 60K miles and was on 2 different trailers.

Thanks, has anyone screwed it to the hitch like bigbunkhouse said and are they all the same thickness.

George, I've used the disk from day one and my experience has been like the others it works great and like Bruce I too grease the king pin. Since I store things in the area between the hitch and the cab it's nice to be able to step over the hitch and not worry about picking up grease from the hitch.

I can't imagine why anyone would screw it to the hitch.

I must say I agree with Rob WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO SCREW IT TO THE HITCH ? ? ? ?
If you think about how and what greese does for you then to screw the disk is a bad idea in my opion.
It is meant to move so under stress and friction nothing can heat up to cause a problem of not being able to get it off. AND THIS DOES HAPPEN ON LONG TRIPS. That's why they say to greese or DISK . I to DO NOT GREES the disk .

I have used the Teflon disc on both hitches and have only seen scuffing of the paint on the reciever head.

I would think screwing the disk to the pin box would eventually cause wear, particularly if the screws happen to come loose they would gouge into the head when you made turns.

The ones I get will not go on all the way in the first place, I put it on as far as it will go then lower the trailer down on the hitch to force it the rest of the way never had one come off.

I am trying to think of a way to screw the disc to the hitch without the screws making contact and rubbing on the pin box. I am on my second disc only because I left the first one on the other trailer . The one that I have now will fall off sometimes, but I have never considered using screws to hold it on. I have thought about some spray adhesive, but have not tried it yet.

If you were serious about screwing the teflon plate to the pin head you would need to drill the holes and tap out the the holes. The get flat head screws with threads to match the tap you used. You would also have to drill the pad so you could counter sink the screws so that they would not come in contact with the hitch head. I still would have concern that the screws would work loose a severly scar the head before you would notice they were loose.

Even though I have told you how to do it I would not recommend anyone do it!
