Pin Weight

Discuss with others about towing. What is the best tow vehicle, hitches, brake controllers, etc, keeping in mind that everybody has his/her favorite.

Pin Weight

Post by Traveler II »

I see a lot of comments about pin weight, but how do you determine what your pin weight is for your rig?

Have it weighed!

When I bought our rig used, the dealer included a detailed weighing. They weighed the trailer as it was -- complete with water hoses, 50 ft. 50 amp power cable, sewer hoses and fittings, furniture, and the fresh water tank totally full -- everything that was in the trailer.

I received a computer illustration of a generic 5th wheel trailer with the individual weights at the king pin, each tire, and then combined weights of each axle, the total weight on the curbside and the total weight on the roadside.

And for each actual weight they also listed Forest River's design maximum weights so I could compare actual w/ maximum -- so I'd know how much I could add and where to add it.

They also gave me the same data printed on a sheet of sticky-back paper so I could mount it on the inside of a cabinet door and Emailed me a pdf file version of the weighing so I can do anything I want with it.

I don't know how much they charge for this normally, but I wouldn't hit the road without one of these detailed weighings.

Weigh the truck with the trailer attached but dont put the trailer on the scale. Then weigh the truck without the trailer, and do the math.

I just went to a local scale two days ago and did what Matt described above. I also weighed the entire truck and trailer to get gross weight, I have everything in the trailer that we will travel with except our clothes, bikes and of course Judy's sewing machine and table (Like American Express - She won't leave home without it). I can always add those weights later.

My weights were:

Total truck/trailer = 20240
Truck = 8380
Pin = 2160
Trailer = 11860

keep in mind everyone will be different depending on what they have in the trailer, hitch weight, I have a folding cover for my bed which is 150 lbs, fuel in truck, etc.

The last time I measured my trailer weight, probably a year go, at the local scales I had the following:

Pin weight: 2000#
Weight on all four trailer tires: 9500#

That gives the trailer weight fully loaded at 11,500# with little, if any, water in the fresh water tank.
