2008 30 TS

Discuss with others about towing. What is the best tow vehicle, hitches, brake controllers, etc, keeping in mind that everybody has his/her favorite.

2008 30 TS

Post by jmitch »

Just got a 2008 30 TS and have a 2003 Dodge 2500 diesel. No chip or jake brake, I am just looking for opinions on towing this new 5th wheel. I travel to oregon, the cal. coast and arizona, so I hit some hills. No problems with my last 24' travel trailer.
thanks for your input in advance.

We have a 2007 30 RKLE that I pull with a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. Getting up the hills isn't as much of a concern as stopping. I seem to have plenty of power getting up hills and I had a Jake brake installed. It certainly helps slow me down.

No mods required, but exhaust brake recommended not necessarily required for you for planned travel. Heavy mountain travel, an exhaust brake will become your best friend. Up is easy but down a little more challenging.

I travel most of the area you mentioned and I have not made any changes to my 02 Duramax with the exception of air bags. They help even out the ride and comfort. Some engine braking would great on the down hill runs but I take it easy and have had no issues with overheating or brakes for all my travels. Enjoy your travels and make the changes you want as the money and the wish list grows.

Do you have a manual or automatic transmission?

I too had your concern last year, but after my first trip thru the mountains last Aug-Sep, the F250 handled our 30TS with ease going up and down. You really should not have a problem with your 2500.

You should probably take your rig to a scale and find out the actual numbers. The 3/4 ton might be a little light for the weight but I'm sure it will pull it. The exhaust brake is a very good addition. I would recommend anyone that tows with a diesel should have one, especially if you are going to be spending a lot of time in the mountains.
