Star Performance King Pin Adapter

Post by Bill in San Diego »

Has anyone had any experience using a Star Performance King Pin adapter? it allows you to use a gooseneck ball with their adapter mounted to the king pin on the trailer. People rave about them on horse trailers, but haven't read much about them on RV trailers.

No experience with this one. I have the Andersen Ranch Hitch Adapter on my old RV and it worked well. Keep in mind these adapters typically void any warranty on the kingpin box and possibly the frame. Although they are rated for 20,000 to 30,000 lbs. the manufacturer of mine did not recommend going over 14K. The warranty issue would be that the adapter puts additional torque on the king pin that it was not designed for.....so they say.

I have been the happy owner of a Star Performance fifth wheel hitch for about a year and a half. The SP hitch company owners are quite glad to answer your questions whenever I've called them...

Ski boy-
How's your Dodge ride unloaded? Mine is kinda rough and I'm thinking of throwing weight in the back until the Cardinal is hooked up.

Also, I noted that most other goosneck adapters only handle up to 2000K pin weight. My 37 RL is 2300+ and the Star Adapter handles 3000. I need to pull the trigger soon on which way to go so I can go pick up the RV.
Thanks

Lots of debate about these on RV.net. Call Forest River and ask what they think. Fifth wheel frames are not built like GN frames that come together at the hitch. I would never use one on a 5er trailer I like and want to see the USA in.

How much air pressure do you have in your rear tires empty? You only need about 32 lbs without a load. I run around 42 in srw empty. At 70-80 it rides like a brick truck! Adjustable shocks help also.

My truck is no limo when it's unloaded... Part of that is my fault as I'm too lazy to take some of the air out of the rear tires and then fill them up again when I've got the bird on (62lb with trailer, as low as 45lb unloaded.) Re the Star Performance fifth wheel hitch - the thing does all that is advertised and more - the trailer is completely isolated from the truck's movement: back and forth, rocking side to side, up and down and zero chucking - it's all mechanical - no springs or air bags or anything else - 20K pulling rate and 6000lb pin weight (very conservative according to the co. owner...) I've owned several fifth wheel hitches; this one is built like a tank compared to my other ones...

62 lbs in trailer loaded? That seems kind of low to me I run 75 to 80 lbs I run 65 lbs in front of my truck and 75 to 80lbs in the rear tires.

But back to the trailer which was my main question 62 lbs in the trailer tires seems low.

Same here, but I believe ski boy is referring to 62 lbs in his truck's rear dually tires.

I was assuming the truck tires as well, hence my comment about single vs dual again! :p

Yikes! I didn't mean to set off a controversy about tire pressure!! I was referring to my dually truck rear tire pressure... 65lb is max according to the manufacturer - if I'm running in hot weather, I leave a little expansion room - trailer is at 110lb (Goodyear 614s)
