Drove a 2011 Silverado

Discuss with others about towing. What is the best tow vehicle, hitches, brake controllers, etc, keeping in mind that everybody has his/her favorite.

Drove a 2011 Silverado

Post by Mike Clay »

Well I drove it 3500 SRW and here is what i noticed
1. Suspension feels much firmer but not so firm that its a rough ride
2. The brakes are much better then mine you do not have to push on the pedal very hard to stop it.
3. Did not notice the power until I was going up a 7% grade and in the middle I punched it 2 seconds later I looked down to see it was already to 80 mph
4. Turbo brake, well not use to this the exhaust brakes i had on my Cummins trucks you could hear them, i did not think this one was working until coming back down the 7% hill it all but stopped the truck lol.
5. The transmission shifts much faster
6. Body changes are slight just a different bumper larger black air inlets on the hood, plus 18" Michelin tires it does sit about 1 1/2" higher then mine.
7. The frame is massive and so are the leaf springs, they have drilled holes in the cross member to mount a fifth wheel hitch but the hitch manufactures have not come out with the mounting kits until mid August.
8. Engine noise is 1/2 of what mine is now

All and all a very nice truck, the one I drove was a 1 ton srw LT package price tag 51k

Mike, Was it a crew or extended cab? I'm interested in a 3500 SRW extended cab but the dealers here are telling me they haven't started production on them yet.

True, but I don't think there will be much to put up with. If it's brought in at least every 5000 miles for service the DEF will be refilled just like they refill the windshield washer fluid every time the truck is serviced.

Well Bruce if I did not have to use it as a daily driver I would think about it. Rob its sounds easy but you will use more when you tow, yes you can carry some with you but you better make sure its the good stuff or the truck will detect it and stop. At 15.00 per gallon from the dealer and Im sure cheaper elsewhere it has a shelf life of one year. But just one more thing to watch I guess.

According to the owners manual of my 2011 F350 it starts giving warning messages about the DEF level at 300 miles to empty. I assume the Chevy will give similar advanced notice so unless you are traveling WAAAAAAAAAY out in the bonnies you shouldn't have to carry DEF with you. 300 miles should be plenty of time to find a dealership or other reputable supplier.

WHOA! I call my local Ford dealer and they sell for $9.00 a gallon. I've read that Flying-J sells 2.5 gallon jugs for around $12.00. I believe the Ford Super Duty has a 5 gallon tank. I don't know what size GM uses.

Hi Russ, I read in the sales brochure that it warns you at 800 miles but I'd probably believe the owners manual. Is the tank size 5 gallons?

It 5.3 gallons and I will check at Flying J to see what their part number is. DEF has been used in Europe for years so this is not a new thing but did some math this morning and should be able to go 3,500 miles while towing at 11.0 mpg so that would not be bad form what i come up with if not towing and getting an average around 15 mpg you will be able to run 450 gallons of fuel through it before needing to fill the def tank.
