My new 2011 Silverado 3500

Discuss with others about towing. What is the best tow vehicle, hitches, brake controllers, etc, keeping in mind that everybody has his/her favorite.

Well after 12 hours of not so fun work we got the hitch in and the wiring plug in. Thanks to George (Olbird) he had to make a custom bracket for all four points. Not much room under there to do anything and we used existing holes so no drilling and with 3/8 inch steel and 150,000 psi bolts its not going anywhere. :thumbrt: Thanks again buddy for all your help today.

The bolts only keep it inplace until the glues dries. =))

I tell you with the new boxed in frame it is one big job to the nuts only the back side of holes inside the frame.
We had to tape the nuts and washers onto the bolts and fish them into access holes on the backside because if you drop anything inside the frame in may never be found and rattle for ever.
Thanks GM for such a strong frame but the engineers needed to put some factory installed treaded plates within the frame for a easy hitch install, they know most all will install a 5th wheel hitch.

OH ya cant forget the space glue had that stuff all over the place. Yes it was warm, 94 degrees and 2 gallons of water later, plus a great dinner that Julie made all went well. Hooked it up to Georges trailer and the truck squatted down 2 inches and both truck and trailer were level. Going out to my trailer early this morning to see if I can get mine to set level and and if all checks out going to tow it down I5 to test how it pulls.

Mike, Hate to hear the difficulty in installing the hitch. You're lucky to have George to help. Guess the RV dealers will charge an arm and a leg to do the installation for us non-do-it-yourselfers.
Were you able to get your rig level this morning? If so, how did it tow and how did the integrated brake controller work? In regards to the brake controller, I am guessing it is standard because I can't find it as an option on Edmunds or True Car. Am I correct?

Yes Vince got it real close if anything I might be 1/2 inch nose high, I lowered the hitch down one inch was a little worried about the back of the pin box hitting but had plenty of room. We took it on a 260 mile tow today to Sisters Oregon up over Santiam Pass which is a lot of 6% grades that go up over 4,000 feet. I wanted not only to get some base lines on heat, power, fuel mileage and wanted to see how the turbo brake worked holding back the trailer.
1. Power is amazing not pushing it was able to hold the speed limit of 55 up the pass.
2. Tranny and water temps plus EGT run pretty much the same as my 08 did the one improvement is the cooling fan comes on at 205 degrees instead of 230 like the 08
3. Averaged 11.7 mpg which is about what the last truck did but this one has a ways to go to get broke in so i expect that to improve a little.
4. The turbo brake works great there is a section of 6% downhill which is 6 miles long never had to touch the brakes to slow it down. :thumbrt:
Yes they have had the brake controller since 2008 and they work very nice.

Here is a pic of the clearance i have left on almost a 90 degree turn

Sits pretty level

Torben,

Do I kind of hear a tone in your comments that sound like a new truck might be in your near future :?: It would be cheaper to get one of those clamps that were being discussed. :))

Mike

Glad to hear you had a good test drive and there's still plenty of time for some local trips before Yellowstone.

That route is our favorite way to travel when we head to Bend or Mt Bachelor it's a very scenic drive. We've stayed at Detroit Lakes State Park and they have sites right along the waters edge.

Rob

Are you going to get it Line-Xed before your trip?

Mike, Sounds like everything working fine that's certainly good news.
When you say YES they have had the brake controller since '08 are you also saying that it comes as standard equipment with the LTZ and not an addtional opption?
