Traveling in Pennsylvania

Post by Travelers »

Just read that if you are pulling a 5er in Pennsylvania you must have a set of safety triangles and fire extinguisher in the truck. I was brousing around the State site. Never knew about the fire extinguisher. Interesting info. I wonder how many other states we travel require both in the truck? Mine are in the rig. I guess I need to move them to the truck.

I have the triangles in the truck, behind the rear seat on the right side, 3 fire extinguishers, 2 in the 'Bird, one in the truck. Just in case, not because of regs.

I carry two orange saftey cones and old school round red reflectors on a stand, but it sounds like that is not what they want so I guess I need to look for the triangles too.

I drive a Rail Road company truck, the triangles, a fire extinguisher is required to be ON the vehicle. Plus a HazMat booklet and a bunch of other stuff. For a F250 pickup. It isn't State, but Fed rules for commercial vehicles in Interstate commerce. It made sense to me to protect my personal rig the same way as the Company requires since the Brute has a commercial registration in CA. I'm not taking any chances on a insurance claim, even though the Brute and 'Bird are a RV. Only the Feds have more lawyers then a Rail Road. I'll follow the Rail Road lawyer guidance on this. If I meet Commercial requirements for emergency equipment, it's one less thing to worry about. Oh, fire extinguishers need inspection tags.

Tags and inspections are free, ask your local Fire Department, so get the 10 year old extinguisher inspected, which is a good idea no matter how you feel about anything else. Including the ones in your house. You DO HAVE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS?

The triangle kits are cheap at about $19-20. I've used mine at least twice when I've had to pull off to change a blown tire. Older fire extinguishers will need a hydrostatic test which will mean going to a fire extinguisher service company for the test, it may be cheaper to just buy a new one. Be sure it's rated for type ABC fires, I've gotten good commercial units for about $25 for a 2 1/2lb ABC unit. I think I will get a 5lb unit for the new truck. It's a good idea to have a first aid kit available in the truck also.

Jeff, where do you store your fire extinguisher in your 2012 F350? Doesn't look like there is room behind the seat.

Several years back I took a one day fishing trip with my good friend. We were in his Ford Bronco. He is an avid Voulnteer Fire Fighter and the training officer for his department. He has the license plates on his truck and the flashing lights behind the grill and in the rear window, the siren that makes about 10 different noises and the VFD stickers on the windows. We made an exit from the Interstate to get breakfast and when we came to a stop there was lots of smoke coming from under the vehicle. The transmission had been overfilled and leaked fluid all over the undercarriage of the truck. When we got out there was some good size flames. He was looking under the truck so I opened the back hatch to find the fire extingusher. After I got all of the Fire training stuff out and his fire fighting bunker gear I could not find the FE, because there wasn't one in the truck. I stopped a 18 wheeler and he let me have his. I gave it to my buddy, who was now laying on the ground throwing dirt on the fire, He got the fire out very quickly with the proper tool. :bounce: :bounce:

Somehow word spreads fast  He was presented a new FE at his next Fire Dept meeting :thumbrt:

It is funny now, but it wasn't funny watching your transportation going up in flames.

I was the Safety Specialist for my company for 18 years we mounted the fire extinguishers across the transmission hump in the service pickups, not an option now if you have a console. I'm getting a side mount tool box repainted and will mount the extinguisher on the outside of it when I install it. I carried one there for several years and never had any problem. I'm thinking I'll buy a 5lb Ansul cartridge type like we carried on our line trucks.
