B&W Companion

Discuss with others about towing. What is the best tow vehicle, hitches, brake controllers, etc, keeping in mind that everybody has his/her favorite.

B&W Companion

Post by dc471 »

Would like comments, both good and bad, from those using a B&W Companion, especially installation and removal issues.

Thanks

I have used the B&W Companion for 8 years with no problems. The unit breaks down into two pieces that are relatively easy to load/unload and assemble. Mine is a 15K. Also I like that when it is removed, the bed of my pickup is flat and with no obstructions.

I also like mine, it is a very tight unit with no movement, jaws always close around pin so it is always showing handle position to prevent slip out.

I have used mine since May 2007 and have been very happy with it. My pickup already had the B&W hitch I bought the Companion Hitch put it together and installed and remove it periodically when I need to haul something that I need the whole pickup bed for.

I did a lot of research before settling on the companion hitch and couldn't be happier with the purchase. Between it and our trail air pin box we've experienced a very smooth ride.

When removing the hitch from the truck; after removing the top portion; do you just pull the handle under the fender and just lift the remaining part out. I watched a video on You Tube that was saying to loosen the u bolts. Is that actually true?

You may be able to just pull the pin lever under the truck if the jam bolt on top of the square tube is not pulled real tight.
Because you suppose to tighten that jab bolt down to remove any looseness than tighten the U bolts .
This tightens the main hitch frame to the truck bed.

I have always pulled the handle under the fender and just lifted the hitch out. I have never loosened the u bolts. I do take a torque wrench and torque them every 6 months.

As a Safety measure............you are "Supposed" to put about 40lbs torque, on the bolt, on top of the Bar going into the Reciever................In Theory .......................some one could reach under, and PULL the Lever, and your ENTIRE hitch could come out.......................unlikely...........but, in a accident, when you would need it to be secure the most, that is when it could happen.

I recall, I believe it is 40 lbs torque.............................I do secure the lever, in place this way...............
