Frame Welding vs Electronics

Post by dfredendall »

I offer this as a precautionary warning. Before any sort of welding is done to the steel frame/components of your trailer, you must disconnect Positive and Negative leads to to the house batteries. The reason is that arc welding sends an electrical charge through the steel frame, through the batteries and can short out electronic circuit boards, rendering electronics useless. A friend recently had a jam nut welded to the trailer hitch receiver on his very expensive motorhome. That welding moment fried his unit’s electronic central control module which controls lighting, TVs, climate controls much like the Lippert One Control system on new generation Cardinals. His motorhome also had chassis electronics ruined by the welding. Repairs of his obsolete electronics will be very expensive. Totally disconnect Positive and Negative Battery Cables BEFORE ANY WELDING.

Dana, thanks for the input yes it will do serious damage. I have had welding done on mine a few times and always disconnect the batteries. It's also important to use a surge protector for the same reason without one you can smoke all of your electronics.
