PullRite Superglide hitch question
I need some advice! I just installed a Pullrite Superglide 2700 in my 2012 Ford F350, Shortbed. It is replacing my Reese manual slider that I was able to hitch up without a guide and get ready to go in less than 15 minutes every time. Yesterday I tried backing the truck up and hitching up for the 1st time between my Pullrite and TrailAir king pin. I had a heck of a time getting backed in and joining the kingpin into the hitch receiver. I even got the king pin high hitched because I tried to join the two with the plate of the hitch being level instead of trying to start the king pin a few inches lower than the hitch plate. What a mess!
Question for those who own a Pullright Superglide: What are some of the tricks you use for aligning the king pin with the hitch while backing up when evidently the king pin must come in 2-3 inches lower than the plate of the hitch and then ride the hitch plate up until the king pin is locked in. I have thought of painting a couple of parallel white lines on both the Superglide's top plate and the kingpin. Any words of wisdom from your experiences?
P.S Sorry if this is confusing but this was not fun trying to hitch up yesterday (especially for an ol'pro like me !!!!!

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
I used that setup for a few years, if the truck is not straight with the trailer it can be a pain.
It works better when the trailer is a little lower then the trucks hitch or it does want to lock in place.
The same unhitching applies for being straight, I had to lift the hitch out of the truck with the trailer jacks once to get unhooked because the truck was not straight.
It did a great job but can be a hassle from time to time.

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
Keith, I use my mirrors to get the truck lined up as I begin to back up. I can't see my hitch, because of my tank tool box, but when I get close to the trailer, I get out and look for the correct pin height. That lets me know if I am lined up well, too. If you can see your fifth wheel, you could try painting a hint on it. On the Superglide, the trailer doesn't pivot on the fifth wheel, so the paint won't wipe off. I suggest that when you lube your rails, don't try do the whole job with the spray. Go to an auto parts store and get a quart can of the same product. I get mine at NAPA. The spray won't stay on. It's too thin. The lube separates in the can, so stir, stir, stir. Don't lube the fifth wheel or you will have a mess. The capture plate doesn't move on the fifth wheel, anyhow. If I can help in any way, post again and I will try to assist. Roy & JoAnn

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
I put a piece of red tape on the center back of the hitch and a piece on the center above the pin, I line up the tape when backing . I have the pin just above the plate when backing, it goes on pretty good.

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
Tom, Do you use a Pullrite Superglide? when you say you have the pin slightly above the hitch, do you mean the bottom of the pin is slightly above the hitch plate front as it is pointing down? I like the tape idea.

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
The factory pins are a standard length, add a 1/4" for the Pull Rite adapter and if you have teflon plate the pin becomes tight on the jaws of the hitch, that is why I use to leave the trailer down a little when backing into the hitch.
When I say straight, it is design to hook up at a slight angle but get past that max angle spot be prepared to have a fight on your hands. It takes time to get use to and know your limits.

Yes the plate is leaning down, pin an inch or two above that.watkinsk wrote:Tom, Do you use a Pullrite Superglide? when you say you have the pin slightly above the hitch, do you mean the bottom of the pin is slightly above the hitch plate front as it is pointing down? I like the tape idea.

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
By the way you do need a Teflon plate because the whole mechanism turns not just the pin.

That surprises me Tom. Doesn't the hitch-head turn with the pin?teallen wrote:By the way you do need a Teflon plate because the whole mechanism turns not just the pin.

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
I need to think about if I used a teflon disc, I am thinking now that I made a square teflon pad for easy sliding during hook up.
But you all are correct the plate turns the hitch.

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
my owners manual says DO NOT use the teflon pad. It is such a tight fit I dont' see how the teflon pad would work.

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
Keith, I went back and looked, I put 1/16" teflon on the adaptor plate, you do not need it but I had custom painted my hitch to match the trailers paint.
The teflon prevented it from being scratched during hookup.

Re: PullRite Superglide hitch question
George, was the 1/16 teflon the round disk that I used with my Reese or was it a special pad that you created? I don't have the old teflon pad in front of me but it seems like it was about 1/8 in thick.

It was a square piece I made from a sheet purchased at McMaster-Carr, you really do not need it.
