BIO

Post by Mike Clay »

So was talking to my neighbor the other day who owns a 2013 Ford F350 and was telling him that some of the Shell stations here are now selling diesel with a 20% bio blend for 3.58 per gallon, no other choice. He said the Ford dealership told him not to use it?????? So while I had my car in for service I talked to my service manager and asked him about it. He said don't use it???? Never got a good reason why but I assume its sensor related. My question is why to the two auto makers advertise B20?? Ford even has it on the side of their trucks. Nice to be told all of this after I put 30 gallons in. I will mix it up since I still need 30 gallons to fill the truck. As of yet no problems and I can't see what the problem would be. I use to run B90 in my Dodge in the summertime. But with all the new emissions who know how this will effect them.

Why would Shell be offering 20% Biodeisel if they know at least two manufactures of the Diesel pickups have their dealerships telling people not to use it? After all Shell is not exactly a location where big rigs will be pulling into to fill up so it was meant for our type vehicles or diesel cars!

I am not sure they are aware the dealerships are saying this.

Just filled up today at Fred Meyer with BIO 15. Would rather not deal with any BIO diesel as my truck is only rated to BIO 5. My Ford mechanic has recommended I change fuel filters every 5K and drain the water separator monthly. I also use Ford's cetane additive.

In Minnesota during the summer months they only sell B15 and next year it goes up to B20.

Minn. Statute Chapter 297--S.F.No. 3683, Sec. 51 (2008)

May 2009: 5 percent
May 2011: 10 percent
May 2013: 15 percent
May 2015: 20 percent

The minimum content levels are effective during the months of April, May, June, July, August, September, and October only. The minimum content for the remainder of the year is five percent.

Topped off in Long Beach yesterday at a Chevron station. Placard on pump said "may contain up to 10% bio-diesel".

I was told, but have not confirmed, that bio is hard on turbo's. Rust and/or corrosion issues.

I think it has more to do with politics :^o than engineering :-B or anything else. If we were really serious about reducing our dependency on foreign oil, we would stop exporting our domestic oil.

I just paid $68 for Motorcraft fuel filters at my local Ford dealer. I change both filters every 10,000 miles as hard duty service. Owners' Manual says routine service can go 20,000 miles. A monthly filter change would get expensive and tedious. Not worth the Bio diesel in my book.

The Bosch CP4.2 injection used on both the Ford and GM does not like water. VW TDI uses the CP4.1 (single cylinder version) pump and has lots of issues with higher number of units in service. Biodiesel is more susceptible to water emersion. Google search gives a lot to read.

Cummins also says 5% unless set up to use up to 20% whatever that entails. I have put up to 20% in my semi which has a cumm. I always add Howes to my fuel and have never had a problem with water or power. with bio you do not seem to get as good fuel mileage but I would not spend to much time dwelling on it. just put vin a good additive it helps lubricate the pump and injectors with this low sulfer fuel. I change fuel filters every 25000 and have not had one plug up in over 18 yrs. :thumbrt:

Been getting bio when I fill up at most Walmarts. Most places here in Texas now are bio. I think the lower fuel mileage with bio is right. The 2011 and up Fords are rated for 20% bio. I changed my fuel filter and air filter at the 20K OFL service.
I have been running Diesel Clean about every other fill up just as a precaution.
