For those that may be interested here's a video that shows a partial breakdown of the unique Ford 6.7 diesel.

Neat video, perfect timing as I am in the market for a 2015 F-350. My 2011 has been excellent, but I trade every three years generally.

I thought it was interesting too David. 8)

I'd be interested in what you think of the 2015.

We just traded for a 2015 F250 6.7 diesel. Have only pulled the trailer on one trip of 700 miles so far and am very pleased with the performance. We got an average of 11.5 - 12 mpg while towing the Blue Ridge and have been getting about 20 highway with the 3.31 gears. This is compared to our previous 2010 F250 gas 5.4 with 3.73 gears that got about 7 - 7.5 mpg towing and 15 highway. The new upgraded engine with 440 hp and 860 torque is really a beast. The truck rarely did downshift and only then on a long tough hill. We only have about 2100 miles on the truck to date and maybe it will do better as it gets broken in.

Thanks for the report Jon. The 3.31 gearing surprised me but it seems that Dodge has gone to the high gearing too with their high output Cummings.

Rob
Those are called EPA gears and most manufacturers are pushing the tall gears for corporate fuel mileage average. With the RAM you have to go to a dually to get anything but the 3:42's. 3:73 give a 23K+ tow rating and 4:10's 30K+. 3:42 are 17K+

Thanks Chris, I just checked the Ford site and it seems that if you want 3.73 or lower you have to go with a DRW :thumbrt:

Now I am curious. If I only want a single rear wheel axle, what is the best all around mileage/towing rear axle ratio to get? 3.42 has such a low tow rating. What are we supposed to do? Keep driving the older model until the EPA relaxes CAFE rules for company mileage ratings? I do not see that happening. Some would have us driving electric trucks, that couldn't haul a bag of dog food. :ymtongue:

Regarding the reverse intake/exhaust on the Ford 6.7, the B series Cummins and most other inline diesels have the turbo bolted directly to the exhaust manifold.

What I missed in the video does the 6.7 Ford have an air to air intercooler, and where is it in the intake path? If it has one in front of the rad, why are they routing the cooled air through the valve cover and re-introducing heat to the cooled air.

Chris, the 6.7 has what Ford calls a CAC rather than an intercooler.

The 6.7L CAC is an air-to-coolant heat exchanger. This allows for more cooling capacity in a smaller under hood space.

You may have noticed that the 6.7 has a secondary cooling system.

The powertrain secondary cooling system, a low temperature system which cools the Charge Air Cooler (CAC), fuel
cooler, EGR cooler and transmission oil cooler.

I barely understand my 6.4 diesel. This new 6.7 and all the "features" sounds like you would need stake in a gold mine for repairs if it ever conks out. I have 125,000 miles on mine, and hoping for another 100,000. By then maybe I will have struck gold.
