Bad day yesterday for my tv

Post by Diesel Dave 04 »

Was pulling up large hill when she lost power and was purring out smoke I made it to the top where there was a pull off and when I got out to look I seen oil running out so I shut her down. Luck my cuz has a f350 fifth wheel equipped so she came and saved me. It is getting towed home today I think it broke a intake rocker and it went through the valve cover or rocker housing I lost 2 gal of oil in 1.5 miles

I took a look at it in the light and #4 glow plug is unpluged and the seal is out of the rocker box so that is where the oil came from. I have 2 codes one is glow plug #4 open circuit, and the other is cylinder #8 conterbution fult. so the issue is with #8, I Think it built a lot of crank case pressure when what ever happend, happend and that is why the glow plug connector popped out. I have to do a oil cooler and egr delete tomorrow after work on a F-550 6.0 diesel maybe tuesday i can rip into this one and see what the heck went wrong.
we had a good time camping to spite the truck issue and the new 17.5 tires and wheels are nice the first thing i noted was that dont squot like the E rated tires ( other words they dont look flat) they also dont twist on tight turns they are stiff and slide, and i also have much less sway or should i say rocking.

Well I pulled the valve cover and the rockers were ok so I did a compression test and found 10 pounds I did a leak down and it filled the bottom end. So I did some resurch and found that there have been many 6.4s that have cracked #8 piston so I removed the cab then the engine

Nice that you can do this work Dave. How many miles do you have on that truck? When the dealer pulled my cab they said not to use impact wrench on the cab bolts because the tab nuts spin loose. They also spot welded the tab nuts in place so there is no future problem. Obviously you've done this a time or two. Why is #8 so special? It was the problem piston on 7.3 liters also, due to poor coolant chamber design. Surprised Mr. Ford did not solve that one in this new 6.4 design.

They created the isssue with the 6.4. all 3 the 7.3 the 6.0 and the 6.4 use a piston with a dish in the top the issue came when they started doing the regen in the 6.4. the dish in the piston leaves a sharp top lip, that thin lip disapates heat faster then the rest of the piston, when they regen they put extra fuel in # 7 and #8 cylinder on the exhuast stroke as to send tons of heat into the exhaust to clean the DPF filter. all the extra heat and cooling on that thin lip makes a brittle week point where cracks start. then when you are under heavy load with 30 pounds of boost and a compression ratio of 17.5:1 that is when it snaps.
The up gradeded pistons dont have that thin lip and Im deleted now so no more regen to make high temps.oh yes the bolts are set up quite wimpy I had to heat them to keep them from spinning.im at 59,890 miles the last 20k I been deleted

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure what you mean by being deleted. Did you somehow manage to cancel the regen process, or modify your exhaust system?

Looks like the area at the left side of the crack was really hot, and the piston was melting a bit? Chris

Is that a dent at the far left of the crack? If it is that could be where the crack started.
