Pin Box Adjustment

Pin Box Adjustment
So, I'm trying to get some additional clearance between the trailer and my bed rails. My hitch is up at the highest position and B&W doesn't make longer pivot arms so I'm stuck on that front. What I'm wondering is if I can drop my pin box down and gain some extra room. As you can see in the picture there are 5 bolts currently holding the pin box on and it looks like I can drop it down a set of holes, but if I do that I'll only have 4 bolts on each side holding it on. What do you guys think? Would I be ok securing it that way?
Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
I think if you come down one step you will have two bolts near the front and 3 near the rear. "Reversed" Should be fine. Actual 4 on each side would be fine. Chris

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
I don't know... but personally I think I would be afraid to do that.

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
I am pretty sure when Lippert installed my Trailair pin box they only installed 4 bolts on each side, unfortunately I will not be home until the end of April to be able to look at it.

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
Call Lippert on Monday and ask them. I need to go out and look at mine but I use a Reese hitch and have close to 7" of clearance over the rails. My only problem with the Truxedo rails is on very sharp turns it just scrapes the cover rail and peels off a little metal. Which gave it the clearance I needed

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
John, With my 5th Airborne I have 7 bolts on each side. 3 front, 4 rear. I could have had 8 but that was over kill. I drilled and added the one at top of front set. Plenty strong for me. Looks like I raised a hole to keep level from OEM setting. I did it 4 years ago, if you know what I mean. Can't recall it all. I have no clearance concerns with mine, but I have no cool cover either, and only 2 wheel drive. A photo will follow later.

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
I pulled the TruXport cover off today and will do another test hookup and measurement. Still considering dropping the pin box and I will reach out to Lippert about securing it with 4 bolts on each side. I'll follow up and let you know what they say. I'm also considering going to an air ride pin box, but I'll have to see what the budget committee says about that

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
We went with the air rise and had to raise the pin box because we were running nose high. Love the air box

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
John, I attached my 5th Airborne with 7 bolts. If you look at yours you see a hole partially hidden by the plastic trim. I used that hole. My OEM kingpin was the Lippert 1621.

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
John mine only has four on each side and it's been across the United States twice now and no problems.

Re: Pin Box Adjustment
Well Lippert got back to me this morning and said I should keep my pin attached with the 5 bolts per side. My test hook up yesterday with the tonneau cover off shows I've got 5" of clearance. I also measured the height of my tailgate to the ground and it's just shy of 58". I looked up the tailgate height for my old truck and it was listed at 59" so I must be near what I had before. I'd like more room so I'm considering going with a Trail Air pin which should allow me to drop to the next set of holes in the frame and give me a bit more adjustment. Thanks for all the help and I'll let you know if I go to a new pin.

Which pin box did you end up putting on Alice? If I remember correctly it is an airbag hitch, but I don't remember if it was the Trail Air Tri-Glide, Trail Air - Flex Air or the Trail Air - Air Ride...........sheesh there's a lot of "air's" in there
Re: Pin Box Adjustment
Did you check to see if three holes line up on the rear if you lower it 2"/one step? Re: Pin Box Adjustment
I have the Trail Air Tri Glide and for me it performs better than the standard Trail Air pin box.
It removed all the forward / backward jerking when hitting those highway joints that throws the weight back and forth for a few moments, also it will add about 2" to the height in the same hole.
I have the same hitch and work great together?
I have the design with the rollers in the head that glides about 3", they make it now with a rubber glide system.
