Dually MPG
Who thinks a 10,000 lb. F350 dually diesel can't get good MPG?

Re: Dually MPG
That's pretty darn good Jeff. We went to El Paso yesterday 90 miles RT. My average for that trip was 19.2 mpg at mostly 70 mph.

Gotta love these 6.7 engines. Mileage like the "good 'ol days".

Re: Dually MPG
Scale weight with full tanks and what's in the tool box Mike. Empty weight is more then the max gross weight of the work F250 of 9700 lbs. Good solid base for towing.Mike Clay wrote:10k what the heck do you have in that thing.

I need to buy a Ford or start complaining that all the Fueling Stations pumps are not correct when I fill up.

Re: Dually MPG
The neighbor here has a 08 F350. He swears that he is getting 10-12 mpg without towing. Is this true or is he embelishing the truth a bit? (Truck's for sale.)

Re: Dually MPG
I know I have heavy foot but I never get above 14- 15 mpg not towing and have seen 12 mpg towing which I think is great.
My dash display shows 19 mpg not towing many times but the fuel pump at fill ups always tells me ( Hello Stupid this is really your used and cost) !!!!!!!!
My 2007 F350 Ford with the same trailer never got over 10 mpg more like 9.5 all the time towing.
Like I said I do have a heavy foot not towing and hoping one day to see higher MPG some day, truck only has 7800 miles on it at this time.

Re: Dually MPG
For a SRW or non "Tow Boss" dually, it sounds reasonable. The '09 F350 "Tow Boss" (F450 axles) FX4 dually I had got slightly less MPG empty then that with 4:15 gears. And around 8 to 9.5 MPG towing. Make sure all the service bulletins are completed, especially the cooling system one. The early 6.4 diesels had major problems with radiator leaks. I'm not sure if all the '08 trucks had the changes made in the production line.
Ford was not happy with Navistar diesels, they took major hits with the 6.0 and early 6.4 engines.

Re: Dually MPG
I hear ya George I have been traveling around here and cant get above 17 mpg but at 75 and 80 mph and the small towns I guess not to bad. In fact coming from Fort Stockton to here with the head wind I got the worst mileage towing so far. 7.8 mpg.

Re: Dually MPG
Ford's latest in technology developments in the engine, trans and engine/trans management will keep them ahead in the mpg war. Dodge and GM will need to step it up.

Re: Dually MPG
Last trip to the Bay Area, I saw 12.5 MPG average for the trip. That included close to 200 miles without the 'Bird on the Bay Area freeways at 70 to 75, and two trips over Tehachapi Pass maintaining 60. Mileage is getting better, the engine must be getting broken in. Or the summer diesel blend has more "oomph".
I'm not a lead foot, except on onramps, I try to merge into the traffic at traffic speed, and run at traffic speed in urban areas, then I set the cruise control at 60 on the long stretches without merging traffic.

Re: Dually MPG
Going to bring this thread back to the top. It looks like I am going to level out at 10.8 mpg towing close to 16k. This is about 1 mpg less then my srw coming home from Colorado with the same trailer. In my case the training wheels seem to eat up that much. With all this being said yes it would be nice to do better but it is what it is. The truck does what it is designed to do and that is to tow heavy. Empty the ride is not great, parking is not always fun and so on. But while towing with a 3,500 plus pin weight its about the only way I can go without going to a big boys truck. I am about 950 lbs from my gvwr and over 5,000 lbs from gcvwr. I do not think I would want to tow any heavier then I am with a pickup. But that just me and my comfort zone.
We will see what it does heading to the FROG rally
