Re: Fuel Stops
Jim,
You can leave the life jackets.....but the flares might be a good idea. On second thought you might need to trade your flare gun and launch flares for the kind that sit on the ground. Or you can pick up a couple of those floresent orange foldable triangle signs and leave the fireworks for the 4th of July
Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Re: Fuel Stops
Well we're not into that much planning. We'll start the trip with some type of theme, i.e., "staying warm" and head out. Most days we travel around 300 miles staying off interstates as much as possible. If we find a place we like we might stay a few days before moving on. During our stay we ask around the campground of places people suggest we see and will alter our trip to take them in. We're retired so we have the time to explore. For example this coming winter our destination will be Pacific Grove, CA. We'll start off from Minnesota in January and won't be there until some time in March. We want to head down and see Big Bend National Park and do some exploring in Texas. That's the great thing about RVing, you can just do what you like to do.
We have found that diesel prices are cheaper off the interstate in small towns, many times as much as 20 cents a gallon.

Re: Fuel Stops
we are 58"10" when connected and 12'8" tall....im never affraid to get fuel I like a challenge and when buying 34 or so gallons WE are the customer and I dont feel bad using the facility to turn , park, manuver, etc. Most of us who drive these behemoths can handle going to the pumps better than those timid dorks in compact cars.

Jim...............I borrowed a little secret someone else I saw did.................................I measured my Rig, loaded ................ .from the very top (AC) down to the ground, and went to a custom letter/sign shop, and had the height (12'6 ) cut out in Vinly --(Mirrored image)......and stuck it in the upper corner, of the drivers side, just below the overhang...........That way when I look in the Mirror, I am reminded of my HeightThe sailor wrote: I just don't want to get to the point where a have to drop the camper ever time I need fuel because I am afraid I may hit something or need 40 acres to turn around.

Re: Fuel Stops
I use the Next Exit, Gas Buddy, and Google Maps when planning fuel stops, though now with a 50 gallon aux fuel tank, not so often. But when I towed the 'Bird with a V10, I got a crash course in pulling in just far enough to reach the gas nozzle and then getting the people who pulled in behind me out of the way so I could back out!
My normal routine is fuel and make a grocery and beer run after I reach a campground and drop the trailer.

Re: Fuel Stops
Jeff, You gotta watch out where you do that when you start reaching out on your trips. You could end up drinking 3.2 beer in Oklahoma for example, or worse end up in a dry county in TX or AL. Better to stash a "use in case of emergency" 12 pack somewhere in that camper!Chief409 wrote:My normal routine is fuel and make a grocery and beer run after I reach a campground and drop the trailer.

Dang, I'd forgotten about dry counties, it's been a looong time since I was back that way.campswithcritters wrote:Jeff, You gotta watch out where you do that when you start reaching out on your trips. Re: Fuel Stops
I am the same way Don, even with the extra 50 gallons. I know about where I need fuel and research the area for prices and locations. In our case I unhook get fuel then come back and setup. Before the tank we would have days that we had to fuel up with the trailer and on more then one occasion Susanna had to help back me out to the street do to not enough room to make the turn in that RV friendly spot or the clown that decided he is going to go in and do his weeks shopping at the mini mart and parks right in your way.

Re: Fuel Stops
Gas Buddy has been a good App for me, always there on the phone, start searching when 1/4 tank, takes some of the frustration out of it when looking for a Diesel stop.

Re: Fuel Stops
When I double tow I have to be very careful where I get diesel, most of the time it is big truck stops, have to make sure I can get out.

Yup! Google earth and Street Maps helps with that. And you can link to those thru Gas Buddy.teallen wrote:When I double tow I have to be very careful where I get diesel, most of the time it is big truck stops, have to make sure I can get out.

Yep that is what I do since installing a 30 gal aux tank. In the past I would need to fill within 200 miles now I can wait till I unhook and set upMike Clay wrote:I get to where I am going unhook open up gas buddy get fuel finish setting up and relax. Then re fuel myself.
