Re: Big boys trucks
Im still thinking if I have to make a change it will be a dually 3500. I should have got one last time and I would not be in this spot.
We will see how much pin weight the fresh water takes off on Wednesday. Plus I can lose over 100 + lbs by only filling my extra fuel tank to 30 gallons if I need to. Still would give me 66 gallons of fuel.

Re: Big boys trucks
Mike the problem with MDT trucks is that they are very expensive compared to a new pickup or an used class 7/8 Volvo with 500k of useful remaining life. You have another option. That is 19.5" rims and tires. http://www.ricksontruckwheels.com/
With a set of these and maybe some air bags you could run with the Aux tank full and tow the larger trailer without problem. The rest of the power train should be up to the task.

Re: Big boys trucks
But then i still have a 7k axel. Truck does not squat any more then with the last trailer. You are correct about the price of the mdt.

Re: Big boys trucks
Mike your rear axle is the same AAM unit that the duallies use. They are rated to something like 11,500 pounds. Only the OEM LRE tires gave the truck a RGAWR of the lower 7k number. Call Rickson and talk to them to learn more. ChrisMike Clay wrote:But then i still have a 7k axel. Truck does not squat any more then with the last trailer. Re: Big boys trucks
Mike,
Have you looked at the new Dodge trucks? Some of the DRW rigs are showing 5500-5700lbs of payload capacity. May not work for you if you go crew or mega cab since they only seems to be available with a short box which might not accommodate your transfer tank. They do however look to be a serious towing beast without getting into the 450/4500 series of trucks.

Re: Big boys trucks
No John I have not looked at the new Dodges. I have looked at the new Chevy's and they would do the job just fine. But I am still looking at keeping mine for now. All depends on the pin weight and how I am going to manage that. Either with adding fresh water for now or going with the 19.5 wheels and tires. I travel with 2/3 tank of fresh water and want to re weigh before I go to the next step. Truck is still close to 1,200 lbs inside its gcvwr I am just not ready to buy a new truck at this point in time. But I also do not want to compromise our lives or others if I am pushing it. Boils down to If I would have known the correct weights and length may not have gone this route to begin with.

Re: Big boys trucks
Somebody should correct me if I'm wrong but everything I read tells me that dual rear wheels almost always have a lower weight capacity than single rear reals. Also the 4x4 usually has lower rating.
